Kyaikhtyio or the Golden Rock counts as one of the most important Buddhist sanctums next to the Shwedagon Pagoda. It is perched on a 1200m high summit, surrounded by jungle, and can be reached by a 5 hour car journey south-westbound from Yangon.
According to legend, the golden boulder on which the Kyaikhtyio Pagoda rests, maintains its balance only through a hair belonging to Buddha. You can climb the mountain in around 6 hours on a pilgrim path right through the jungle, or be driven comfortably up to a point just below Kyaikhtyio.
The yearly Festival of Lights up on the Golden Rock in October is well worth coming for.
