Putao, a town in the far north of Myanmar, is best reached by air from Mitkyina. If the weather conditions are good, you will already have a view over Himalayan glaciers from the airplane window. Driving from Myitkyina is not advisable; it is very unpredictable in terms of timing, because of hundreds of bridges and possible washouts.
Putao is an Eldorado for mountain hikers and nature lovers. Surrounded by glaciers and mountains up to 5000m high, Putao offers incredible hiking tours, visits to completely untouched villages, white water rafting and canoeing, as well as visits to gold washers and logging camps, where elephants still carry out heavy labour.
Putao has an interesting nature museum and a very lively market, where local hunters armed with crossbows offer their game of the day.
In the town there are many hotels, ranging from luxurious to simple.
We would be happy to advise you on a travel programme in this spectacular and still largely undiscovered region of Myanmar.
